The chart also illustrates the importance of penetration. We can see that with half a deck cut off (26 cards) the SCORE with a spread of 1-8 is a bit better than the SCORE with a spread of 1-20 when one-deck is cut off. So, the worse the penetration, the higher the spread needed to obtain a decent SCORE. With a poor penetration at the far left of the chart, any spread results in a low SCORE. This is why many casinos provide poor penetration. On the other hand, they are shooting themselves in the foot by slowing down the game and collecting less from the average players. Single-DeckAt single-deck, high spreads are not tolerated by the casino. Fortunately, high spreads are not required to obtain a decent SCORE. Here the red area uses a spread of 1 to 1 — that is flat bets. There is just a hint of red at the highest penetration. Gains in SCORE going to 1-2, 1-3, and 1-4 spreads are huge at all penetrations. Notes: Single-deck SCORE charts with a cut-card show a dip in SCORES instead of a constant increase as penetration increases. This is discussed on page 425. These charts are for one set of circumstances only and results will vary by rules and strategy.
